The number of lighthouses on the shores and islands of Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, and the other Great Lakes, somewhat diminished now, once numbered in the hundreds! And for good reason--the waters of the lakes can rival those of the open ocean in bad weather and have downed more than a few ships.
